Bob Atkinson

Speaker: Bob Atkinson is one of North America’s recognized experts in design and publishing technology. He has more than 70 clients across Canada and the U.S. using either Quark or Adobe platforms. He is a columnist for both Graphic Monthly Canada and Design Edge Canada, where he writes the popular “Tool Tips” column, focusing on software products and technological trends.

How to Sell Design: An Interactive Panel Discussion on How to Make More Money From Design

Craig Swistun

Moderator: Craig Swistun, RGD, writes Design Edge Canada’s popular “Mind Your Business” column, focusing on practical business tips for designers. He has worked as a designer and creative manager for various corporations and design agencies, co-founded a small graphic design firm, and worked as a freelance designer. Currently, he talks about the value of good design regularly in his role as a partner and vice-president of a Toronto financial services company.

One of the things that truly separates good design firms from great firms is their ability to sell their creative solutions to current and prospective clients. Yet the challenges facing small firms, sole practitioners, and large firms are different. Or are they? Join us for a panel discussion with designers of different shapes and sizes to hear about their sales challenges and those solutions they have implemented to help grow their business and increase their revenue. Our panelists will discuss the unique “sales” needs of in-house design departments as well.

Who should attend: Designers and design managers with sales or sales management responsibilities.

Sustainability & Design Workshop 1:
Using Footprint Calculators for Greener Design
Presented by Spread the Word.

Patrick_Robinson

Speaker: Patrick Robinson, RGD, Co-Founder, Spread the Word and Associate Partner, Grip Limited. As a designer, design manager and design educator, Patrick plays a role in encouraging sustainability and corporate social responsibility. As an Associate Partner at Grip Limited, Patrick co-ordinates the print and studio team efforts for the “intercommunipackastratapromotising” services of the agency. Spread the Word is an association of designers, design managers and design educators whose mission is to help make the world a better place by spreading the word of cause-based design. Visit spreadtheword.org.

Many organizations today are purchasing “carbon offsets” with groups such as Zerofootprint and Carbonfund to offset the carbon produced by manufacturing, travel and other activities. The challenge for designers is that the legwork required to calculate the carbon footprint for many design projects — especially smaller jobs such as stationery, postcards and small-run catalogues — is too onerous to be practical. In this workshop, Spread the Word will put sample design projects through multiple footprint calculators to create a new chart giving basic benchmarks for standard projects, with suggested offsetting actions. The goal is also to provide standardized “recognition copy” that clients (or designers) can include in their printed pieces, providing them with a way to “action their intent” to make the world a better place.

Who should attend: Designers and design managers who deal with clients and who want to make their practices more environmentally friendly, while at the same time giving their businesses a new competitive advantage.

In this workshop, Patrick Robinson of Spread the Word will show how his group has “re-worked” the industry standard creative brief to include sustainability prompting questions. Patrick will walk through this new brief to show how you can use it in your own practice and how it will benefit you and your clients. This workshop is also an opportunity to collectively improve upon the sustainable creative brief by inviting your questions and suggestions. Join us to make a difference and to network with like-minded designers.
