Canada Post to loosen restrictions on direct-mail creative
Direct-mail designers will have more flexibility for direct-mail packages, thanks to new guidelines coming in 2013 as part of Canada Post's sweeping Postal Transformation program.
Visitors to Design City will have several opportunities to learn about the new rules from Canada Post representatives as well as authorities from the National Association of Major Mail Users (NAMMU). Both organizations are taking part in Print World, home of Design City. All visitors to Design City have full access to Print World.

Among the forthcoming changes to the Mail Guide specifications:
- vertical addressing will now be allowed on envelopes (i.e. address copy parallel to the shorter side of the envelope)
- the amount of "quiet zone" space on the envelope will be reduced, leaving more room for creative
- the number of required closed/tabbed sides on a self-enclosure has been reduced from four sides to two sides
- the range of accepted fonts for addressing label text has been greatly expanded
Other changes will increase the maximum weight for samples in magazine polybags from 100 g to 250 g.
Design City takes place Nov. 17-19 at the Direct Energy Centre, downtown Toronto, as part of Print World.
